What To Expect

Latvia is the Baltic country that does not try too hard, which is precisely its appeal. Riga has one of Europe's best Art Nouveau districts, an entire neighborhood where every facade competes for architectural drama. The medieval Old Town is compact and walkable, with the House of the Blackheads and the towering St. Peter's Church as the obvious landmarks.

Outside the capital, Latvia opens up. The endless white sand beaches of Jūrmala stretch along the Baltic coast, just a 30-minute train from Riga. Sigulda, in the Gauja River valley, is the adventure capital with bungee jumping, hiking, and three medieval castles in one valley. Further east, the onion-domed churches of Latgale hint at a different cultural heritage.

Latvia is also quietly one of Europe's best-value destinations. Excellent craft beer costs pocket change. Restaurants in Riga serve creative, seasonal food at prices that feel like a mistake. It is a country that rewards curiosity without punishing your wallet.
