What To Expect

Macau is what happens when Portuguese colonial history collides with Chinese casino capitalism, and the result is stranger and more interesting than you might expect. The Ruins of St. Paul's are the iconic photo stop, but the real charm lies in the cobblestone lanes of the Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site where pastel colonial buildings, Portuguese azulejo tiles, and Chinese temples coexist on the same block.

Most visitors come for the casinos, and yes, the Cotai Strip is a surreal Las Vegas on steroids. But skip the slots and explore the quieter side instead. Coloane Village feels like a fishing village frozen in time, complete with a tiny chapel, a legendary bakery (Lord Stow's egg tarts), and zero skyscrapers. Taipa Village offers narrow lanes of restored colonial houses and casual Macanese restaurants.

The food is where Macau really shines. Macanese cuisine, a 400-year-old fusion of Portuguese and Cantonese traditions, exists almost nowhere else on earth. Order African chicken, minchi (minced meat with potatoes), and the famous Portuguese egg tart, whose flaky crust and caramelized top make the Hong Kong version look lazy.
